I totally loved the caprica/RM analysis! I agree totally. I think that guy says what I was trying to say yesterday but much better.
This space has been thoroughly explored to death by scifi since its inception as a genre and I doubt Caprica will uncover anything new in that arena. THIS I think is the problem with Ron Moore's "big ideas" he acts and writes like he's treading on new ground but it's ideas that have been discussed in scifi for at least 100 years. (And by writers who are much better at world building than he is)
I find Ron frustrating because he's really quite good at the character stuff, it's just BSG felt as if he got distracted by shocking the audience with shocking twists and ideas, and he just really sucks at tying them all together coherently. When he said about the finale that it was about the characters, that really pissed me off, because it wasn't, it was about making his cool idea for Hera fit (and gah that cool idea wasn't even scientifically correct and ended up dooming them to being little more than a scrap of genetics, *rage rage rage*).
If it had been about the characters that idea should have been dropped when consistant characterizations and actions made it impossible to carry out without railroading them.
I remember realising that Ron Moore was the same guy who did next gen, and rembered butting heads with him then. It would be interesting to have a non-scifi thing to compare with. I totally agree with you about the finale!!!!
My Next Gen knowledge is a bit spotty, I have more experience with the Next Gen movies he did, and come to the conclusion that not all of the problems with them can be dumped on Berman and Braga when there are similarities with BSG's later problems.
Those two are still dicks for Enterprise and Nemesis though.
Next gen was the show I watched as a teenager, and went to a couple nextgen cons. I remember Berman too. I think I just wanted more continuity and character development, but they just said "no it's not a soap opera". But then they started doing that with DS9, cause they finally realised that's what people wanted. But by that point I'd given up and started watching Babylon 5!
And it's not like it had to be set in stone; JMS had to deal with cast changes and network fuckery and still managed to tell a well done, coherent overall story.
It's funny, the BSG finale reminded me of an RTD finale, with the shoving in of things that really shouldn't have been. It just needed God to be depicted as glowy magic CGI dust. Or Rose.
Yes, all that talk about being so alooooone because he keeps leaving people in alternative dimensions/mind wiping them/not phoning them is a bit more preferable to terrifying blonds, creepy manipulation and god talk.
*giggles* I think I'd place my money on the doctor. I mean she's incoporeal and mostly invisible and can beat up Gaius pretty well, but the Doctor's got a lot of experience defeating people who are out to try and end the human race.
