Ficlet: If You Can Imagine It

The initial idea was for the latest
makelaurahappy challenge, unfortunately I am a lazy good for nothing and it didn't get beyond the idea stage before the deadline. But luckily it turned out to work wonderfully with the
ar_drabbles dialog only "in the dark" challenge.

"Can't you hear it? The waves breaking against the shore, the gulls crying."
"Hmm, the sound of dinner conversation from the little restaurant just beyond the sand."
"I thought this was an uninhabited island?"
"It is. Apart from the restaurant, and little bookstore down the street. It sits right next to the family-owned bakery that serves the most wonderful profiteroles."
"I've not got so much of a sweet tooth."
"Then there is the little market. We get up before dawn to get the pick of the fresh fish, straight from the crates offloaded by the fishermen. They move them as if they weighed nothing."
"I have my arms around you, just like this, and I kiss the back of your neck..."
"Hmm."
"Just letting you know that I'm still there."
"Jealous?"
"I'll have you know that I did my time on one of those boats. A little fishing boat, anyway."
"You never cease surprising me."
"One summer before joining up. Frak, I thought my body would never recover from the beating it took then."
"But it was worth it for all the ladies watching from the dock."
"Pity about the grizzled old Admiral boyfriends. Now your laughing at me?"
"It's just, I've never had an Admiral boyfriend before."
"Good, otherwise I'd have to kick his ass."
"Just, saying it like that, makes it sound like we're teenagers."
"Fooling around in the back of my Battlestar?"
"Stop it, Bill."
"But I like hearing you laugh. When we're walking along the beach, I love the way it echos over the water."
"The smell of the sea, the cool wind in my hair. The smell of salt that always needs to be washed out."
"I don't mind it. I get to help...Laura?"
"Hmm?"
"The comm's not going to stop ringing."
"Just...let it ring."

Date: 2010-04-21 08:32 pm (UTC)I love the tiny touches in this drabble - Bill's jealousy for one - I love jealous Bill for some strange reason only known in my own head.
I also love how the fantasy went from an uninhabited island to one with a restaurant and a book store. That's all they need.

Jealous Bill FTW!
And this:
"Just, saying it like that, makes it sound like we're teenagers."
"Fooling around in the back of my Battlestar?"
I love the idea of them making out and fooling around like a bunch of horny teenagers. Almost nothing is hotter.

I love these lines.
You create so much different scenes with just 300 words, it was sweet, lovely and nostalic if that's possible for something that never actually happened. Loved it.
